Today, December 18, is the International Migrants Day. This Day was proclaimed by the United Nations on 4 December 2000 and commemorates the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families of 18 December 1990. It is celebrated every 18 December of each year in the UN Member States to "dispel prejudices" about migrants and "to raise awareness of their contributions in the economic, cultural and social fields, for the benefit of their country of origin and of their country of destination as well". On this day, the UN encourages all invited states, UN Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, to provide information on human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, to share their experiences and undertake actions that ensure their protection.
